Chemical. We cry when we're sad or happy because of chemicals relased.

An emotional reaction that can produce weeping and tears. Yes, it's strange that when we are sad, or in pain, we cry, but also when we show relief or happiness, we can also cry!
It's the human way of showing emotion by the physical exertion of sobbing, choking and blubbing. Blood pressure can rise as can various chemicals in the bloodstream.
In a way it's the bodys' way of 'getting it off your mind', and overcoming grief perhaps.

I thinking along the lines same as why we smile.
An overwhelming reaction from the nerves to the brain.
I do know it is partially important that we cry, so tear ducts can lubricate the eye's in order for them to deal with great hours of uses to them.
