I saw the movie Babel a few weeks ago and I can't stop thinking about that scene where Susan (Cate Blanchett) and Richard (Brad Pitt) sit down for a drink in Morocco (this is before she gets shot). Susan disinfects her hands and flips out because Richard wants to have his drink with ice cubes (and god knows what kind of filthy water they are made of).
But then she opens a can of Coke and drinks straight from the can - not minding all the germs on the can!

?!!!

Well to make things clear, I don't see a problem with Coke, but with the can.

And I do not put my lips on cans without washing them first either. After all the hands and places that can has been through!

This is not a question whether she is a germophobe or whether she thinks Coke is not "impure", but a question WHY ARE THE PRODUCERS SO INCONSISTENT. If she cares, she cares. If she doesn't she doesn't.
Sowhy, in Babel, she cares one minute but does "the unthinkable" the next.

The likely reason is that Coke paid big bucks for product placement and would not be happy if she did something to the can before she drank the stuff.

Morocco isn't the cleanest of places and she had no idea where the water was from, water is very limited over there also. She didn't want to catch anything and was playing it safe since her hands were already dirty from the trip so far. The can of coke had not been opened and was probably brought from a nearby town or shop so because it hadn't been opened yet. There was no germs contained within the coke.

She proabaly felt that the coke was safe because it wouldn't be made with unpurified water. I think that the point of that scene is not that she is germophobic, but rather she is upset at the way (and the place) her husband has chosen to try to resolve their issues surrounding the loss of their baby. Her anger just manifests itself in that form. she is unable to communicate her true feelings (hence the name BABEL) so she shows her anger another way.

Maybe she was just worried about the water and germs on her hands. Phobias are hard to understand and everyone isn't consistent in their behavior, least of all characters in a movie.
