Yogi was a catcher.
But, here is one of the great bits of baseball triva you may not know.
When Bill Mazeroski hit the winning homerun against the Yankees in the 7th game of the 1960 World Series, YOGI WAS PLAYING LEFTFIELD.
In 1960, the Yankees has three very good catchers... Berra, Elston Howard and John Blanchard.
And since there was no DH back then, it was not unusual to see one of them play another position.
However, Yogi will never been known as a great outfielder... but as a catcher.... he is one of the greatest of all time.

For most of his career he was the best catcher in baseball for the Bombers. In later years, once they brought up Elston Howard the two would share the position. Ellie finally became the starting catcher and Yogi moved to the outfield. Primarily left field where he shared duty with Hector Lopez. That was during the years that Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris covered center field and right field respectively.

He was a catcher. He played for the Yankees form 1946-1963. His #8 was retired in 1972 along with Bill Dickey who is also like Berra, a catcher, and he wore #8 like Berra as well.

He was a catcher for the majority of his career, then he moved to left field when Elston Howard took over as the regular catcher.
Berra was the left fielder Bill Mazeroski's World Series winning home run; in the videos you can see #8 looking up at the ball flying out of the park.
