he does have principles and he is doing what is right for the country. he will not be swayed by whatever the popular wind at the moment is-being President means that you have to make some unpopular decisions for the sake of your country.

The country is so polarized right now that Bush doesn't need to change his tune. When Clinton was in charge, people weren't quite so dead-set in their politics. There were a lot more middle grounders who had to be kept happy.
Right now, right wingers and christians will always support Bush no matter what.
Left wingers will never support Bush no matter what.
The few people left completely in the middle either don't care anymore, or will allow the media to provide them with an opinion because they won't take the time to get truly informed.
The only thing that Bush changing his tune will do will be to cause the media to portray him as a 'flip-flopper', which is a pretty powerful putdown apparently. It will cost him some of his fan base and gain him nothing.
It's a sad and dangerous state of affairs when the actions of a leader won't win or lose an election for his party.
Hopefully this post is neutral enough for ya. Honestly, I think BOTH parties are abysmal... we need another option in there IMO.

Right now it would be near impossible for any 'other' president to change their tune. Popular mood is not the answer because people change their moods like they change their under-ware. If any president were to swing into the popular mood of Americans every time they blinked their eyes at an issue, they'd have no time to pay attention to the things that need attention, past our own borders.
Take some time and watch this video. It is an interview with 3 former, now tolerant terrorist who have turned against that way of thinking. This interview was part of the AM Morning program on CN8 in New Jersey. It tells it like it is and will surprise you as to where al Queada is breeding terrorists and where their money is coming from.

I consider this video very important for people to see because it will not only change their attitude, but also give insight to why GWB must pay attention to the issues at hand.

If Truman had listened to the people near the end of WWII and then acted on that, do you think he would have dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The President is supposed to execute the laws, not win a popularity contest. So if you think his actions in Iraq are illegal, throw him out - but do not assume he owes you any obligation to modify his beliefs. He owes this country an obligation to do what he thinks is good for the country, popular or not.

Bush won't change his tune to suit popular mood because he is determined. Or stubborn. Depending on your definition.
I wouldn't have a problem with just that. Unfortunately, he also won't change his tune to suit facts, such as the fact that we did not find WMD's in Iraq and the fact that a bipartisan Study Group and most of his generals are recommending a phased withdrawal.

It's the difference between a politician and a leader. Politicians follow the crowds. Leaders shape them.
