After a few errors I have just managed to get my new Sony DVD drive into my computer!!

However, the reason I bought a new drive was that my old one, wouldnt play DVD's very well, the picture was very "jumpy" and after a while would just stop and start and stop and start etc!!

But with music its ok and can copy and record absolutely fine

My new one is doing exactly the same! Doh!!!!!

What else could it be?

All help is greatly appreciated!!

From the additional information you've given, I'd suggest that the biggest problem is your CPU. This doesn't preclude, of course, that your graphics card my not be powerful enough. You haven't given details of your graphics adaptor.

Check in your manual to see what speed processor your motherboard can go up to.

Usually, if you have jumpy or stuttering pictures while playing DVD movies its down to either the graphics card, cpu, ram or all of the above.

I would not look at your dvd player! Check your system setup against the recommended settings. best bet is that your system is not up to it.

If however you have quite an up to date pc then I would start by stopping any non-essential running programs and then try playing a dvd, see if it helps.

Good question, many people have this problem and blame their DVD Drive but it can be one of two things. Graphics card and/or your memory. Try upgrading both. (cost around £30 [$55] for decent hardware.

That is not a problem with your DVD drive. That has to do with either your CPU, RAM or Hard Drive. If you are low on hard drive space, or available RAM, or if your CPU is not fast enough.

The problem might not be your DVD drive but the amount of memory your computer has or even your video card. if you have less than 256mb of memory that is probably your problem.

chances are your video settings are doing this. check the setting in the software you are useing. it should be set to the default settings. also try a different software to play the dvd's. i've used windvd and also power dvd with no problems.

the problem is probably within the hardware decoder. if it connects to it's own card, get a better one. if it connects directly to the motherboard, buy a better compuer

i think your it could be your sound/graphics card check the card is securely in place or renew with a upgrade i think this could be your cheapest way. and hope it's not an on-board card.

Maybe it is your DVDs. I suggest a Disc Doctor.

Maybe its your computer and possibly you may need some more memory.
