Would the story be more understandable watching the The Beginning first or should I watcht the original version then watch the new prequel?

Watch the original, it's the best. Still one of the scariest movies of all time.
And if you are going to see a prequel, see Dominion. If I remember correctly, it was the original prequel, but it was rejected because it wasn't bloody enough (Or too bloody) so The Beginning was released. But Dominion, though it got a small release and almost no publicity, is said to be much better than The Beginning

Yep, the movies were made to be watched in the order of being released. Movies like these are made that way for a reason... imagine watching the new Star Wars before the originals... it would take away so from the stories of the old and new.

Watch the original first. If you watch the prequel first, you will be sort of lost and it will SPOIL some of the "suprises" in the original version.

Watch it the way we all watched it. The origianl first then the new one. I think you will understand better that way.
You wont be disappointed by the original one. enjoy
