My favorite group of extinct creatures are the ammonites. They became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs.

If you're looking for more recent extinctions, most of the North American megafauna became extinct near the end of the last ice age. This would include sabre-toothed cats, dire wolves, cave bears, mammoths, mastodons.

If you're looking for very recent extinctions, then the heath hen, Passenger pigeon, Pasadena freshwater shrimp qualify.
