Buffy aired first. It was on for three years before Angel even started. At the end of the third season Angel (the character) leaves for L.A and that's when Angel the series started.
So to watch in the correct order, you should watch Buffy season 1-3 first. Then watch season 4 Buffy at the same time as Season 1 Angel, and watch the Buffy episodes first, alternating. Then season 5 of Angel continues on it's own after Buffy finishes at the end of season 7.

Hi there,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the origional show, Angel was a character on that.
The split came at the end of Buffy season 3, when Angel and Cordelia left Sunnydale for LA (and their own show 'Angel').
After that they pretty much ran in tandem, some of the same events of Buffy, for example, where later shown or mentioned on Angel, even if they were running on different nights/time slots.
An example of this was Buffy's death towards the end of the series, the LA characters are shown on 'their' show reacting to it....and her eventual return.
Many of the characters made guest appearances on the two different programs, for example, Willow, Oz, Andrew, and Faith were all on 'Angel', and Angel and Buffy themselves even had a few swap-overs.
It was made hard by the fact that Joss W. was directing both shows, pretty much at the same time on the same lot, so it was a juggling act trying to make time for guest appearances.
The final episode of Buffy didn't mean an end to Angel, which ran for what...one, two seasons after Buffy finished its run? But the crossovers still happened, and Spike, one of the main characters from Buffy, swapped full time onto Angel :)
I hope that makes sense! :)

Being the obsessed fan that I was about both shows, I should know this, and I believe if they were on the same night, it was Buffy which aired first, then Angel. Later they went to seperate nights.

Buffy was a show made from the movie of the same name. Angel was a character on the TV show and due to his popularity on there, he was given his own spinoff.
