By greatness I am referring to all aspects of the game, offensively, defensively, base-running, throwing arm, etc.

Good question, hard to answer. However, below are some key stats from some of the more notable catchers and by no means is all-inclusive. One respondent did mention Josh Gibson who was amazing but stats were not keep as well the league he played in.

Based on the stats below, I would have to give my vote to either Mickey Cochrane or Mike Piazza

I do not mean to take away from anyone. In the '70's it was between Jonny Bench and Thurmon Munson. They were perrinal allstars behind the plate for their respective leagues. Then Munson was tragically killed in a plane crash after playing only 9 yrs, so it became Bench. But since '93 there is this kid named Ivan Rodriquez who has it all. So, Bench or Rodriquez take your pick!! hope I spelled Ivans name right!!

Have to agree, Johnny Bench. Not much of a baserunner, but his offensive (especially as a power hitter) and defensive skills are unequalled.

Probably Josh Gibson from the ***** Leagues. The strories I've heard put him in the Babe Ruth category. Most people never saw him play, so it is hard to truely give his accurate place in history. The late Buck O'Neil says he was amazing.

If you are only looking at MLB, then it probably goes to Johnny Bench, with Ivan Rodriguez closing in.

Yogi Berra is my favorite catcher. I think that he along with Thurman Munson are the best catchers ever.
