It depends on how you define "racism." It's illegal to let race factor into business decisions--you cannot *not* hire someone because of race, religion, or gender, without risking a lawsuit. If you commit a crime against someone *because* of their race, it's called a "hate crime" and you get a stiffer penalty if convicted.

But in one's personal life, it's perfectly legal to be a racist. That's why the KKK (Ku Klux Klan, our version of white supremicists) are flourishing. In personal life, you don't have to worry about LEGALITY, but about PUBLIC RESPONSE. So if a public figure says something racist, then he may prompt a public outcry and lose jobs or be uninvited to certain functions, but that's not because racism is illegal. That's just because the people who are crying out, who are firing him, or who are disinviting him are disgusted and don't want anything to do with him.

There's a difference.

Well technically, no, but the government has made laws that do not allowed the discrimination of blacks and other races. Because of the first amendment, people can hate on blacks all they want (like the KKK and Westboro Baptist Church), but if violence occurs, they will be dealt with by the law. There are many places in America in which there are places primarily made up of whites. In El Cajon and Detroit, these cities are primarily made up of people from the Middle East.

No, but you are restricted to the confines of the law such as equal opportunity, no physical harrassment etc.
