It has only just happend 2 days ago. What could it be and will it be costly to get sorted, approx how much?..any mechanics out there to help..thanks

Sounds like your clutch is going!
Is it a Ford?
If so it could be the ratchet and pawl which is a plastic automatic clutch adjuster on your clutch pedal!
Two things to know about a hydraulic clutch if your oil level is low!
Either its low because your clutch is worn!
Or its leaking and in that case you would loose your clutch completely!
A blind guess would be the springs on your pressure plate are broken in which case change the whole lot! there isn't a great deal or difference in price compared to taking your gearbox off again!

sounds like the clutch or an integral part of it, the clutch release bearing, clutch cable streteched/ not adjusted, worn clutch plate. just so you know> when u press your foot on the clutch a cable pulls on a lever and seperates the running engine from the gearbox so that you can manually put the right 'cogs' together inside the gearbox (ie select a gear). If the clutch plate is worn away or the bearing is worn out the gearbox will not disengage fully from the engine making it progressively harder to seclect a gear. Sometimes you can tell if a clutch is nearing the end of its life by 'feeling' where the take up point or'grab' is on the pedal. You put the car into gear and release the pedal really slowly, if the car only starts to move when the pedal is all the way up then the clutch is worn out. Another sure fire method is to put the car into gear, leave the handbrake on and and release the clutch, if the car stalls then the clutch plate is grabbing ok, if the car continues to run when you release the clutch then it worn out. its only really a job for a mechanic, they'll be able to do it properly and fast, some cars need special tools to align the new plate up etc. on the other hand it might just be the clutch cable that needs adjusting sometimes they can stretch. an honest mechanic will be able to tell you in about 10secs, ARC7499 is also right, some cars have hydraulic clutches instead of cables, he is right about leaking cylinders etc. a garage will tell you if they are honest, its unlikely to be the gearbox

It could be a number of things.

Cable clutches can get stiff if the cable is on the verge of breaking. They sometimes start to split where the cable runs through the bulkhead.

Hydraulic clutches can give problems at both master and slave cylinders, but you should see signs of leakage. Slave cylinders can go VERY quickly sometimes. (Usually after you've replaced the master cylinder).

Could be a change of gear oil is needed. Is gear selection more difficult on cold mornings, and when the box warms up, does it get easier?
Some cars respond well to the newer synthetic gear oils which contain Dexron II or Dexron III.
Toyota used it to good effect in the MR2s when they started getting complaints of gear selection problems.
It's actually designed for automatic transmissions but you can use this ATF in manual boxes too.

Clutch may be worn. Any signs of slipping?

Gear linkages on front wheel drive cars can become loose, and therefore not select properly. This happened to me on Fiesta a couple of years ago.

check the hydrolis fluid in the clutch master cylinder first, (should be somewhere near the firewall and connected to ur clutch lever) it usually used DOT 3 brake fluid but check with the auto parts man he will know more about the vehicle. if the level is good then check the clutch slave master cylinder on the tranny to c if its leaking fluid these r the cheapest and usually the first to go out. If they r in good condition then ur pressure plate or throw out bearing meay be out cheapest .......and possibly only parts to be replaced. Dont let them sell u the whole clutch assemblu if u dont need it i mean how nuch is the car really worth and how long r u gonna stay with it..........if your going to stay with for a while then get the whole clutch replaced (3 main parts) U will be there anyway and it might not cost much more than just replacing the pressure plate or the bearing. This happened to my car a few years ago. If it is the same, it is simply low or leaking transmission fluid. Cheap and easy fix.

No mechanic but have had alot of cars, gearbox could be on way out I have had it happe to me before

sounds like your clutch is dragging, either put your foot right down on the pedal (make sure your mats are not underneath the pedal!) if your system is hydraulic it may need bleeding (try pumping the pedal first) or if it's cable it may need adjusting

When this happened to me, it was that my clutch went out.
I don't remember what it cost.

clutch needs adjusting...or ur gearbox oil is low..
