added 10w 30 oil to my car and when I put the cap back on?
I noticed that it said add 5w 20. Will this effect my car in any way?
----------------------
No, it's a recommendation, not engraved in stone. Just add the "correct" type next time it need oil, no damage has been done.
------------------------
Also, my sister didn't check her oil for 7 months (can't believe it) and when she went to add oil it took 2 liter's...a few weeks later I added another one and it was still low so I added one more..my question is..because she didn't check it for so long did the 2 she added in get absorbed faster so that she needed 2 more..or was it because the oil was just so low that it took 4 liters within a month??
-----------------
Oil doesn't "absorb" into the engine. It was either lower than she thought to begin with, or is leaking or being burned. 40 lashes for not checking at LEAST weekly by the way.
Watch for drips under the engine, or blue or black smoke out the exhaust, if neither, just keep an eye on it, but you probably dodged that bullet. Sounds like it was almost out, and you could have lost the engine as a result.

the numbers on the oil 5w 20 and 10w30 relate to the 'viscosity' or 'how sliperry and thick' the oil is. one number relates to how sliperry and thick when the oil is cold and how much it will protect the engine. the other figure is how slippery the oil will be when the engine is hot. Unless you have a high performnace racing car it wont make much of a difference but you should as a rule use what the manufacturers say.
you should always check you oil, if you leave until the light comes on some damage has already been down, in a perfect engine in a text book situation it will not 'use' any oil as it is purely there to lubricate the engines moving parts and just circulates around and around. however in the real world, some cars do consume oil, through wear along the piston rings, valve stem guides, small leaks etc... you should check you oil weekly. the classic sign of a car using oil is obviously leaks underneath the car (little drips do count) and if the engine is worn then blue smoke out of the exhaust.

Adding the 10W30 will not hurt your engine, but it is always best to follow the manufacturers suggestion. It is a problem if you mix your oil with a synthetic oil. Your must use one or the other.
About the second question, your sister must be asking for trouble. The oil should have been changed within this 7 month period. Are you sure she added two liters or was it two quarts. Oil is sold in only in quart or gallon size. If she added two liters, then the engine was out of oil. Running the engine really low for who knows how long will result in premature engine wear causing excessive oil usage. Fill the engine to the full mark on the dipstick then check the oil weekly if you suspect that it is using oil. If it is, then see a mechanic.

the oil was probably just that low. after she put in the first two, they had to work their way through the engine. changing just the oil is not enough though. she needs to change the oil filter also. if she would like to minimize her maintenance, she should change the oil and filter regularly like every 3,000 miles.the oil sending unit may not be dispersing the oil. she might even need new oil seals and an oil pan gasket. better to take to a pro because the engine could be going as a result and that's big money!

It will not hurt your car. Be sure to change it to the correct viscosity next time you change oil. Advise your sister to get her oil and filter changed ASAP. Monitor it once a every two days. If it continues to drop there's a serious mechanical issue. The rings probably scraped the cylinder walls do to lack of lubrication. when there's lack of lubrication heat is created and rings do not like excessive heat. Anything over 260 degrees f. is a near death experience as they quickly loose tension and oil / compression quality's go down the tubes. If all else fails get a compression check and a cylinder pump down check. I good mechanic can guide you from there.

Ok for the first part of your question it depends on how much you put in and how you drive your car plus the weather conditions you live in .Alls you did was put a heavier wieght of oil in .some ppl do this on perpose becouse of the climate they live in . For your second question she could have just been real low on oil or she could be burnin oil up from a ring or seal that is going bad from lack of lubrication .Check her exust out for sighns of burning oil and have a filter and oil change done .It should only cost a couple bucks or have a freind do it its a really easy job .

It depens on what car it was...but most cars can take 4-5 litres..and dont worry about the mix.....of 10w-30..as long as you put the rest of 5w-20...its worth checking the fluid levels in your car every 2-3 wekks depending on milage...happy driving..

10w30 is much thicker than 5w20, but if the weather is warm...the car should not have problems.
You can go 7 months without dealing damage to your car, if the amount of oil is sufficient and it does not leak. 2 liters is a large amount, but if the car still runs fine, you're ok.
If it needed two more, then it is either very low or leaking--but 10w30 will leak much slower than 5w20.

depends on how big ur block is. i have a v4 and it takes usually 4 quarts to fill, u shouldnts overfill ur blocks.. also u should try to chek if ur car is leaking oil. that could be a reason y u needed to add more oil. oil should be changed every 3,000 miles for maximmum protection against sludge
