They lie along a major active plate boundary, where continent-continent collision is going on.
Northward-directed subduction has continued beneath the Hindu Kush from the Mesozoic, when the region formed part of the southern margin of Asia, until today. The Hindu Kush and Karkoram ranges are products of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian continental plates beginning about 50 million years ago.geology.geoscienceworld.org/ cgi/content/abstract/26/10/871
This convergence generates complex stresses in the region resulting from both subduction and rotation of continental blocks. Major tectonic features in the region include the Darvaz-Karakul fault, the Harat fault, the Chaman fault, and the Indus-Tsangpo suture zone.
The Hindu Kush region is highly seismic. On average, there are about five magnitude 5 or greater earthquakes per year whose epicenters are within 100 miles (161 kilometers) of this event. Earthquake depths in this region range from the surface to depths of 205 miles (330 kilometers).http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2002/eq_020325/neic_0325_ts.html
In the Hindu Kush region, the seismic zone appears as a contorted slab-like structure with a width of 20 to 30 km. earthquake epicenters are aligned east-west and have focal depths of about 200 km. This zone connects to another that trends N45°E and has earthquakes with shallower focal depths of about 100 km.
In the eastern Hindu Kush Range, most of the granitoids appear to be subduction-related plutons that predate the India-Asia collision, but some younger granitoids have been dated. http://geology.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/26/10/871.
