Hi...I ended up designing web sites for many of my clients because I couldn't find existing businesses doing a high enough quality to meet my standards. Hopefully some of what I've learned, and regularly tell my clients, will help you here. (And you're paying a lot less for the info hehehe).
First if you have an existing business, in today's society I think you are losing out if you don't have a web site for many reasons, and obviously bringing in business is a major one.
Second let me save me you a lot of money and regret with this answer. You can start an online store with significantly less than $1500, especially if you are willing to educate yourself and do some of the work yourself. I wouldn't tell people how much you are willing to spend because they will gladly charge you that for it lol. Of course if you want to just hand off the design and follow-up to someone it will cost more so think through your needs, how much time you can commit to this etc.
Third, research some of your options. Given the type of business you have it might serve you well to consider an Ebay store, since it will link you with customers immediately. You can still do a separate online site. But this might be a low cost way to test the waters and become more knowledgable in it, not to mention build up an online clientele.
Truthfully I would need to know more specifics to answer other key questions. Are you currently set up to accept credit cards? Do you have any staff able to help with packing/shipping items, correspondence etc.
But the short answer is YES do it...just find the way that makes the most sense to you. But any business you get online is more than you have now, and might end up being very profitable. And be sure to cross promote (put your online info with any other sales and vice versa--discount coupons are a great way to bring in business).
Just watch out for those offering expensive packages and get rich quick schemes. Those folks are making $$$ for themselves not you. And if you don't use Ebay make certain you are using a secure server/market basket or you will have a huge mess.
Best of luck with it!
ETA sorry not sure where Larry got his figures but the providers/hosts I use are significantly less than those figures. Check out Godaddy.com and Powweb.com. Both are low cost and very reliable (and frequently offer specials, especially if you are already a client). He probably is talking about web design as those numbers would be fairly accurate. But hosting is virtually nothing. And clearly I don't disagree with the Ebay option...but it's a good idea to have a stand alone site too. And remember layout, if done well, is a one time expense that should pay for itself in no time. And if it does well then you can look at revamping the site in a few years to keep it fresh, but that's for down the road!

have you considered starting on e-bay first..
you could list your items there.. with your web address...
just a thought.. website. is like $300. plus.... the better ones run about $600. plus then you need hosting...
e-bay... pretty much free minus the money they charge for selling items for you
