I keep getting this bad smell coming from my vents in my car but only when the air is blowing to defrost my windows and is set on the new air as opposed to the recycled air or the air that comes directly from the engine. It also happens whether I use heat or a/c and only when described as above. When the vents are pointed at me they do not smell. Please help it is getting gross.

If it is a filter it is not the air filter.

It has to be the smoke cause it does have that scent to it. I am going to try to spray lysol in it.

I have the same problem in my car, so did my moms new car. If you have smoked in the car then it could be that. My moms car was like 5 days old when i noticed the smell and she said that it was because when they tinted her windows she smoked in the car without rolling the windows down. My car got the same smell after I let my mom and her husband use my car for a month. It is three years later and I still can't get the smell out. (I am an ex-smoker as well and that maybe the reason)

Would this happen to be a VW? I have 3 friends who had Passat's with such issues. Supposedly it was a moldy musky smell which the dealership alliviated with some Lysol like spray but no matter how many times they would get it done, it still reaked horribly.

I took care of it by drilling a drip oil on the condenser pan.

you got some fungus buildup on your evaporator. This usually happens when the drain on you A/C gets clogged and water starts to collect inside the evaporator housing. Open up all the windows, turn the A/C fan at full blast but set the thermostat to HOT. This would cook the fungus and dry them out, once dry the fast moving air will take them out. Might take a while. Or you could just take it to the shop and they can take out the assembly and wash it for you...
