In my opinion, the United States should be an example for all to follow. Being generous is part of that. I certainly would not like to live in a nation that had no social safety net for those that fall. There are many genuinely disadvantaged people that need help. The many government programs available for them are supposed to be designed to prevent abuse. Certainly there are those that manage, nonetheless, to abuse the government's generosity. It would be impossible to eliminate that abuse, just as it is impossible to totally eliminate the government's abuse of the good will of it's citizens through corruption.

Does it matter? Does the dole make sure that people eat, drink and live another day to find a job? Does the dole ensure that when they find a job they have bus fare to get to that job? Does the dole know who will and will not be a productive citizen tomorrow even if it doesn't appear that they are today? Maybe the dole could just go around and fairly redistribute the jobs so that everyone that is able to work has an opportunity to work instead of providing job security for those already employed by sustaining the unemployed until an employed person croaks, becomes too ill to do their job, or just piss off their boss and gets fired. If you have a lot of time to worry about what the dole is giving out maybe you haven't given enough.

No, I don't believe we need hand out dole citizenship, especiallyl to those whom are unemployed. Good heavens, we support enough people whom are unemployed and live off the working class people.
Our government provides food stamps and welfare checks to anyone whom says they are in need. All the way down to low-housing, yet after 5pm, it is amazing the number of ex-husbands that are there for the night.
If you don't have a green card or a citizenship, the you should NOT be allowed to collect from any government programs.

The U.S. government does not provide income to unemployed citizens as a whole. Each state has what is called "unemployment compensation". I live in Indiana. In this state a person is entitled to a weekly check, for 26 weeks, if you are laid off, downsized, etc. This money is intended to tide you over while you find another job. There is a two week waiting period and it stops as soon as you gain employment. You cannot draw this money unless you were gainfully employed for a certain amount of time the year before.

I know that (R) Governments think bout the Citizens and the Residents that are Unemployed. like Bush. He doing everything He can but the (D) Governments knock his ideas down the drill and wont do anything for this county. that what is hurting us. the (D) wasn't running everything in Washington, I believe U.S.A would be better off. And for the Records The New Orland's was told weeks before the they got hit the Hurricane and their Governor told his people to stay and they lesson. so it not the brush fault it the New Orland's Governor did that to his own state. anyone blame anyone for what happen theire people ther need to blame their selves for staying when the President told them they have to leave no choice and the people stayed.

Unemployment benefit is NOT the dole.
It is an insurance system you (and your employer) pay into to that you can collect a percentage of if you should lose a job. It lasts for 6 months. In certain circumstances it can be extended.
As for other 'welfare' benefits.Yes they are available - that is why no one ever starves to death in the US.
Are they abused? Sure...but I came here from Europe - EVERYONE was on the dole there...even if they were working 'under the table'.

We've got a couple of different welfare (dole) systems. One is basic unemployment--if you had a good job for a certain amount of time and were laid off (it doesn't count if you quit), you can collect a percentage of what you'd been earning, from the government, for a certain amount of time. For some reason I'm thinking six months? But I could be wrong.
Also, the government provides food stamps and welfare checks to people who can prove they don't earn a certain amount of money per year, as well as providing some low-rent housing for them. It's a pretty low amount, which means a lot of people who are working steady jobs earn just too much to get aid, but too little to eat well.
Some people take advantage of the welfare system, but it's far less than the people who oppose it would have you believe.

Yes, the US govt. hand out dole to its citizens including the immigrants and green card holders. That is why laziness are rampant and those who are resourceful and who want to work to earn more are suffering from these people who just rely on dole outs. I feel that injustice is very clear on this matter, that the government should lessen or stop the said giving of dole outs.

I got laid off from my job and I am receiving unemployment benefits. I made $80,000 a year and I am receiving $960 a month.
It runs out after 26 weeks, even though my employer paid into the fund for 4 years.
Lucky for me, I have savings, because it doesn't even cover the mortgage.
It ain't the dole, buddy.

The Federal government shifted welfare programs onto the States, including unemployment programs, quite awhile ago. It is truly a disgrace that the richest country in the world treats it's poor with such apathy.
