I had a hamster, but they are not as great as you may think. Most of them bite, because their vision is poor and they scare easily. I'd suggest a guinea pig, large enough to be handled safely, but small enough to live in a cage (easier to clean up after).
You could try a bird, but they can be messy and noisy. Large fish tanks are definitely a lot of work (been there, done that) and I wouldn't suggest them.
Another idea is a ferret, but they have a unique smell that you may not like, and require a good deal of interaction similar to a dog. Good luck, I'd just do a guinea pig!

In addition to what The BirdLady said rats HAVE to have a same sex friend to be with. They are a group animal by nature and need company of their own kind.
Also rats arn't good if you are looking for something that dosen't need a lot of space. The MINIMUM space a pair of rats should be in is 2 cubic feet and the more space the better.
Also, please do some serious thinking about getting ratties because 1, they do require a lot of care and 2, they can be addictive, I started out with a pair and I now have 8 and this in less then a year.
Here are some great links for info about rats as bets and a link of breeders world wide.

get turtles, I am not really a pet person but I bought two small green turtles just for the heck of it. They were 4 dollars each. I keep them in a plastic container that's about the size of a tissue box and I changed the water when I get off work. I feed them once or twice a day with turtle food.
don't get fish, I bought like a dozen and one died each day. the turtles are almost a year old now.

My girls have turtles and it seems to work great.. They always forgot to feed dogs or cats or clean up thier messes... rodents, hamsters rabbits, ferrets all stink so NO.
Turtles don't eat much or often so if they miss a day its alright... As long as you have a large tank (they need plenty of room) and a good filter... you don't have to clean the tank as often.. Turltes live forever also..hehe.... Good Luck! ( OH... aquatic turtles not box turtles)

gerbils are cleaner, friendlier, and sweeter than hamsters.
gerbils are fun, and awake in the day time. gerbils live a little longer(usually), and not near as messy as hamsters. gerbils would be much more fun for an 8 yr. old.
if you get a hamster this is what you will hear:
"mommy, why is he sleeping all the time?"
"when will he wake up, so i can play with him?"
Hamsters have the popularity that rightly belongs to gerbils.

If your daughter wants a pet, she should be old enough and responsible enough to care for it. This means you should not have to clean any tanks. Get her something that she will be able to maintain and make sure she understands all of the responsibilities in caring for it and that if she does not, you will have to get rid of it. Then, you do not have to worry about cleaning the fish tank ect....

i know wat u mean about dogs so how about a bird? If you dont like that idea you could get a guinea pig or a hamster. My advice is to stay away from chinchillas they are cute but exspensive. You could get a lizard like an iguana. You could take her to a pet store and find something different or creative and if worst comes to worst you could get a pet cat and keep it outdoors but then your daughter would most likely be upset if it runs away or gets hit.

as a mother of kids who wanted pets over the years and a friend of other pet owning mothers....
any furry creature can cause allergies to act up, including hampsters and gerbils and Guini pigs. all rodents STINK...gerbils and hampsters bite not only because of the sight thing but they smell food on the child's skin (must wash before ANY handling!!!!) cage bedding has to be changed OFTEN!!!
8 may seem old enough for a pet but trust me please!!! YOU will have to take care of it no matter what it is.
good luck in whatever you choose
