In n' Out is by far the best, simplest burger in Los Angeles. Burgers is all they do there and their menu has never changed. You cant go wrong with it!!
If you want a non-chain burger forget Apple Pan or The Counter. I would recommend Father's Office in Santa Monica. Their burger is not made to order. You must have it their way and its the only way to go!!
Enjoy.

my favorite burger place would be the Counter (yes that name of the restaurant) near 28th and Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica
this restaurant (yes they have tables despite their name)
does thing a little different as you enter you are given a slop
of what you would like to order (hamburger. garden burger, turkey burger and zillions of extras
I love the burger I had there it was delicious and good
the only warning I have is that you must come between 11 and 12 if you come after 12 there's a line out the door!
(this for weekdays) not sure how the crowd are on the weekend

WOW! Everyone one is saying In and Out... Well In and Out is ok if you wish do give your money to Religous Freaks (Check the underside of there cups and fry containers for the bible verses printed on them (Scary)...
For the other that said to try Francisco's in Long Beach good luck finding it because it actually called "Frisco's" it's a small up and coming chain you can also find on in Downey but what makes this place different to most places is the waitresses not sure if there still on skates.
My Favorite in LA is a small place called the Apple Pan (West LA)you got to go there to see and taste for yourself. Try there Cheese Burger.
If you are looking for a place that's more grown up try Hamburger Mary's (West Hollywood) they have Kickass Burgers and drink but this places has a twist check it out
I just remembered a place in Burbank called Mo's if you want to try a different burger like the FoggyBottom Burger (Peanut Butter and Jam Burger sounds wierd huh but it's actually very tasty)

Fuddruckers on Santa Monica serves the best burgers, next to the usual double-double I tend to scarf down at In-N-Out occasionally.
