A god, goddess or supreme being. The Christian God is an example.

Besides being a god or goddess, deity has this meaning also...one exalted or revered as supremely good or powerful. That's why Pharaoh was considered a deity...the Sphinx may have been too, but I doubt it. The Sphinx does represent something, but I don't remember what. Other deities from Egypt are Anubis, Isis, Ra.
