Japanese companies will only hire someone with a university degree. I don't think there are any volunteer opprotunities, but it doesn't hurt to look.

Big chain English schools have recruiting branches in North America. Geos, Nova, Aeon are the ones you can check to actually work in Japan. As for volunteering to teach, the only program I have heard about is through christian schools on their student missionary program. That is what I did. But I had finished two years of college. There are other missionary organizations that accept volunteers to go to Japan, and their entry point is teaching English.

It also sort of sounds like you are talking about the working-holiday visa. Where you basically work and travel for a year. Japan does have an arrangement with Canada for that type of program. High school graduate is a requirement. And I think the age limit is around 28 years old.

Good luck.

They will hire you if you can speak and understand Japanese. If you can't speak Japanese that might be a little difficult for you to find a job there.
