Today our hamster is one year old. It's very lucky as it's it's had lots of presents(treats and peanuts) and my daughter( age 8) who is it's proud owner has made it a little cake from seeds with a candle on top
However I feel it is a day slightly tinged with sadness as I know they don't live for long.
Do you think she will ever need another cake?

We have a dog and a cat as well so she's not short of fluffy pets.
The dog and the cat get on very well together but we have to keep Mrs Ham ( yes that is her real name ) safley in her cage .

Hi Animal lover!!!!!!

We have had no shortage of pets over the years, especially hamsters! The one I decided would be the 4th and last died the other month. Izzy didn't live that long, only 2yrs, but that still isn't bad. My brothers first hamster, Shelly, died aged 3 and a half. When your daughters hamster dies however old it is, hold a funeral in the back garden and bury it. Tell your daughter that Mrs Ham lived a good life because by the way it sounds she definitely will. Hope this helped!!!
Mad about animals!!!!!!

I've had quite a few of them.. depends on their type. The one I have now is a russian dwarf and he's about 4 yrs old. I call him grandpa. He's old and wobbly but he's still kickin! =]

The Dwarf Campbells Russian Hamster and Dwarf Winter White Russian hamster usually live between 1.5 and 2.5 years and only reach a size of about 8cm - 10cm. The Chinese Hamster is 10-12 cm in length usually lives to 2.5 to 3 years. The Roborovski Hamster is the smallest at only 4-5 cm and lives to 3 to 3.5 years.

My Hamster lived for Four and a half years and yes she'll need another cake when the hamster turns two. You should secretly call all her friends and make it a big deal.

Oh bless,

I have had several hamsters, you are so very lucky to have one to live sooo long.
Bless your daughter for all she has done, that is just so sweet, but maybe a goldfish would be a better present or maybe a Guinea -pig if she really wants something fluffy.

We had our first experience with hampsters about 5 years ago. One day, I noticed the little guy was very shaky and wobbly, so I called the vet and ran him down to be checked out. One of the first questioned she asked me was "Hold old is he?" to which I replied, almost 3 years old. The vet was astounded and told me that most hampsters dont live much past 2 years of age. It was news to me as well, as I had never thought about it much till then. He was suffering from old age, and had a tumor, so I had her put him down as he was in pain. Not much later, we got our 2nd hampster who lived about 18 months and are now with our 3rd hampster. They make great pets!

I've had 3 hamsters with the longest (Sandy) living to 3 years old. Just make sure they don't get to cold especially in the winter as they will try to hibernate which they mustn't. Enjoy your time and try not to think about the end.

hamsters live 2-3 years. i used to have 2 hamsters, and i believe they lived to be about 2 and a half yrs. old.
i would think in human years your hamster would be around 17 yrs. old.

best wishes!!
