Let me see if I understand your question Amon. Thunderstorms are essentially of two types - frontal and air mass. Air mass thunderstorms form with the unequal heating of the earth's surface which causes instability and overturning of the atmosphere and the formation of the thunderstorm cell. Frontal storms are caused by the lifting of warm, moist, unstable air by the frontal surface causing thunderstorms to form. These are the two major categories. There are also thunderstorms formed with the genesis of tropical storms and with the orographic lifting along for example mountain ranges which like a front release the instability of a warm, and moist air mass generating thunderstorms. Hope this is helpful to you.
