When I switched on my laptop , windows failed to start up ( many times ). I ran a Hard Disk test through bios ,and it said Hard Disk error.? Is my hard disk finished ,and if so, what would have caused this ?

would software changes have caused this , or would it be hardware or electrical changes ?

It is a possibility that the hard drive is gone. Another possiblity is that it has a few new bad sectors that had some required windows files on them.

Hard drives have moving parts, any time you have moving parts there is a possiblilty for failure. Most likely it just failed on it's own as they do that sometimes. Otherwise it would have been a jolt or a drop to the laptop while it was running that could have caused it to slowly fail.

My suggestion to you would be to take it to a service center if the data you have on it is worth saving. They may be able to retreive some of the data.

Then just buy a new hard drive, install it and reload windows.

Sounds like some portion of your hard drive critical to Windows starting has failed. You obviously can't use that drive to boot into Windows anymore, but it doesn't necessarily mean the drive is fried. Try taking it out and putting it in a different PC to see if you can get to its data (so you can transfer valuable documents to another, stable drive). If that is possible, I recommend running chkdsk on the drive to find any more problems.

Hard drives are one of the most common parts to breakdown because they have moving parts. Over time they naturally wear down and will eventually break.
