I read a statistic this year that 85 percent of Valentine's cards were purchased by women. I think that men sometimes give a gift without a card, and that women are buying Valentines for more than just the one man in their life. They buy valentines for their kids and friends and grandmas and coworkers too.

Stands to reason---for centuries now, the focus on Valentine's day has been (in our culture, anyway) that boys/men are supposed to give a gift to their (presumably female) sweethearts on St. Valentine's Day as a token of affection, interest and attraction.
Modern advertisers are now acknowledging the inclusive nature of the holiday, ie, that girls/women can, and often do, buy gifts for their sweethearts nowadays (regardless of gender). Advertisers are now focusing their ads for this newly-acknowledged and so far relatively untapped consumer group.--And it works!

You bring up a good point. Part of it is if men see girls buying, the remember to do it themselves. If they see men buying, they will think "what gits" and not spend money and keep the shops in business.
