There is no point to have a holiday on a weekend, because everyone is off then anyway.

It was initially done to create some consistency in the work and school week, rather than have holidays falls randomly throughout the week. Hence, if all federal holidays fall on a Monday [with the exception of a couple] then you stll have four consecutive days of work and school AND the benefit of a three day weekend.

It is done in order for people to enjoy a longer "get away"
By having them fall on a Monday
employees can leave work at the end of the day on Friday
travel to a particular destination by Friday night
have a full Sat, Sun. and most of the day Mon before
coming back in Monday evening to be ready for the
workplace on Tuesday morning !!!
