they are different, ones heavy (death) the other is more dramatic with keyboards and singing about satan (black) they both are extream in their own way as death metal, a lot of bands sing about rotting flesh, etc, stuff from horror movies

Black Metal is within the same extreme metal category but developed in response to an increasingly stale scene. Black Metal originally relayed on a more amateurish sound, blown out speakers and tryed for a much more havoc drawn sound than the more brutal heavyness of death metal. Black metal vocalist typically attempted for a higher screech than the grunts of death metal. As time went on black metal began to polish its self up and experimented wit classical music and heavier orchestration. After syphonic black metal came coat tail grabbers like Cradle of filth and Dimmu Borgir who seen a market for the music eventually making black metal as stale as death metal once was. Definitions get more complicated when trying to define the Gothenburg sound and some of the retro thrash bands that came out mid to late 90's who took equal influence from both scenes.

Death Metal as lyrics you would expect are about DEATH, black metal is more dark and demonic.

black metal is death metal taken to the extreme plus satanic messages, gore, horror elements into the music..
basically just look at the lyrics.. example:
does Children of Bodom sounds "black metal" to you?
no.. dont be confused by the name 'Bodom'.. its just the name of a place in finland, Lake Bodom..
musicwise, i think its just about the same with death metal..
both have death grunts, blast beats, uber heavy distortions, fast double pedals..

Death metal is death satanic sound from the lead singer such as on cannibal corpse, opeth, nile, with heavy guitars and drums sounds and beats and black metal is more of dimmu borgir, some rob zombie songs, the iowa cd of slipknot,
