Hopefully the next person in the White House listens to common sense and international law, and will give the detainees fair and open trials.

Remember these people are not terrorists - they have never been charges, let alone convicted of any crime whatsoever, and the legal standard that has held firm for thousands of years is "innocent until proven guilty". We only have the word of the Bush administration that these people pose a threat. Many were detained far away from any conflict zone, and were handed to US forces in return for a huge bounty.

Whilst Guantanamo Bay stays open, the US has no credability whatsoever. It can't even have a go at the human rights records of Cuba or Iran without sounding hypocritical.

Any of that could happen. We will find out after January 20, 2009

Half of them have already been released without charges and cleared by their home countries of any terrorist activity. The majority still being held will also be released and cleared. Only a small percentage will actually stand trial.

That's why this administration will just shoot them or burn down the prison with them in it. Is that so bad really? Solves the problems you mentioned and trials cost a lot of money.

they don't need a fair trial. they should be before a military tribunal. there's a difference. they are ENEMY COMBATANTS who are NOT WEARING UNIFORMS, WHICH IS IN VIOLATION OF GENEVA. but all you care about is how we violate geneva, not the other side. makes zero sense to me.

some assholes will probably just throw open the doors and let them leave. you better pray you got neighbors with guns.

We're just going to release them to Cuba...because we're not going to pay for their trip home. Budgets are tight these days.

Most will stay where they are. Many of the remaining detainees are there because their country does not want them back.
