Is there any special software that writers use, or do they go with Microsoft Word, like everyone else?

Most popular software is MS Word. There are other specialized soft-wares.

There are host of such software. Word will be more useful because you are familiar with it.

Most use Word, though there are other similar options. My father worked at a business paper and all the reporters/writers there used Word except for one guy who used Appleworks.

I am currently sharpening my writing skills. I believe Microsoft Word Office is the best tool to have.
