My husband (who recently received EMT certification) thinks my friend's 12 month old looks jaundice. We don't want to scare my friend by mentioning this to her, but feel like we probably should for the sake of the child. Any suggestions on how this hould be handled or what could cause this? Child is otherwise healthy, to our knowledge anyway.

It could be something wrong with the liver......BUT it could also be something as simple as getting too many orange/yellow vegetables in their diet giving them the jaundice look. Have seen this happen to many many children and once they get older and start to eat a variety of food they will go back to a normal color.

maybe you could ask your friend how the child has been feeling then talk to her about what your husbands concern is. you could also offer to go with to take the child to the Dr. Jaundice can be a sign of liver desease.
What Causes Jaundice?
Jaundice may be caused by a number of factors, including:
An obstruction of the bile duct, often due to a tumor or gallstone
Hepatitis
Biliary stricture (a narrowing of the ducts that transport bile)
Cirrhosis
Pancreatic cancer
Inadequate blood flow to the liver
Congenital disorders involving bilirubin
Malaria (an infection that can destroy red blood cells)

you know, if it's not jaundice, it could be something else. I went to school with a kid who always had a yellow tint to his skin and in his eyes. This was do to lack of water and too much sugary drinks. It also was some sort of a medical condition of his, but he was normal other than his skin tone. Maybe that is something to consider,

Not telling your Friend may be dangerous.
Jaundice is usually a sign of liver problems, it can appear at any age.
Tell your friend what your Hubby's thoughts are and suggest he/she be taken to a Pediatrician. Perhaps the parents have noticed and thought they may be "over protective/worrysome" so they've waited to see if anyone else notices or the child complains of anything.

You can get jaundice at any point in your life. It has to do with the liver and should be looked at by a doctor.

Ask your friend is she has taken the baby for her 12 month old check up and vaccines? if she has not encourage her to take her in and stress how important it is for her to have her 12 month old check up. Then mention that you think her complexion has been changing. Sometime we as parents do not noticed since we are seeing them everyday. But if she is a good friend she will appreciate.

Eating too many yellow vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash) for too many days can give the baby's skin a yellowish tinge. Find out what she is feeding her.
