I am able to provide the plant with ample sun, but the plant needs to be small and portable and capable of surviving over a few days or during the weekend when I'm not at work.

Go for a succulent or cacti plant these work excellent in the office. Keep all plant's away from fierce heat such as radiators though. A fern such as the Boston fern is very attractive too however misting maybe required due to air dryness.

Jade plant or money plant is a fine specimen these plants are very easy to care for just water it carefulkly from under- neath like all cacti and succulents to stop rotten from the base. I rarely water my money plant. probably about twice a month in winter and once a week i will pay attention to it during the summer too and only water it if feels very light by checking the weight of the plant in the pot too. try a spider plant or some kind of ivy. They clean the air and tolerate some neglect. I also have a zygo (christmas cactus) in my office. Lovely to look at.

small peace lilys, anthuriums, -- really most anything will weekend over if you water it on friday. when you say ample sun you get direct sunlight? from which direction? if you get morning light (east window) you won the office plant lottery. make a humidity trough -- get a shallow dish and put rocks in it and put water in this and put your plants on top -- it makes humidity that just about any office plant will thrive on. now you can grow orchids, just about anything.

I'd get a succulent - not a cactus. They are slow growing, low water requirements and there are such a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. I love them!! You could make a little dish garden with several different ones and top with pebbles or sand.

A Cactus, it doesn't need watering that often, so you can go on two week long vacations and it won't die.
