I am currently looking at Red Bellied Piranhas. And I wanted to know if they are legal in all 50 states and if not which ones. In my research I couldn't find a really max size. I also couldn't find things on sexing them.

If you are going to get piranhas, please keep them in the correct conditions. They are schooling fish and by nature need to be in groups of at least 6. However, that requires a very large tank--150 gallons might be ok. Keeping pirahnas in any kind of tank is a risk though--they need a lot of room to swim and can turn aggressive towards each other if they are frustrated with their surroundings. You also need to take precautions when cleaning their tank. So in other words, if you decide you would like to keep these fish...do lots and lots of research beforehand. Make sure they are legal in your state (NO they are not legal in every state. In some states you can keep them if you have a license, and in others they are just illegal.) Get a very, very large tank, start out with 6 juvenile piranhas, and with proper care you MIGHT end up with 6 adult pirahnas. You also need to be careful about feeder fish, most of the feeders you see in pet stores are loaded with parasites and are not healthy for any fish to eat. I don't know anything about breeding them, but I wouldn't get your hopes up about breeding them in captivity.

If you would like an aggressive fish that you can keep and breed in a smaller size tank, look into convict cichlids. A breeding pair can be easily kept in a 30 gallon tank, and they are incredibly easy to breed...just add water!

hi- I raised piranhas (pink bellies) two times from tiny children to finish grown Monsters (about a million/2 and inch in length at beginning, to round 6inchs once finished grown). i have also helped associates do an similar a number of situations. I did an similar aspect both situations which looked as if it would workout basically effective. to initiate (7 children) position them in a 20 gallon tank then when they reached a length of about 2 inches I placed them in the "finished grown tank" mine grow to be a unusual length of 40 8 gallons. They not in any respect gave the impression to be scrunched or at a loss for area. there grow to be a short era of time when I had finished grown piranhas in a 30 gallon. That looked quite short of area so the 40 8 grow to be more beneficial actual in step with "an effective length." i imagine that the conventional 55 gallon tank with that is huge body would were type of a cadillac of tanks for them. some thing higher possibly would were overkill. on your difficulty besides the undeniable fact that, we are talking about 2 piranhas. 30 gallons will be basically quite too small and the 40 8 gallon like I had is possibly more beneficial of a luxury tank. in case you are able to attempt to flow searching for a tank interior of those 2 sizes (i'd say a common 40 gal length) your piranhas will stay an effective existence. For the most area, the piranhas will stay docile and they highly very prefer to discover places to cover on the bottom. besides the undeniable fact that, once startled they could fairly disrupt dissimilar ornament and filtration structures in the tank. In a small tank they are going to dart throughout the bottom in the blink of a watch and slam into the glass on the different aspect.
