A female ferret, or jill, will go into heat and stay in heat until bred. This is the number one reason for getting them spayed, The alternative is to put her with a vasectimized hobb, or male. If she is not brought out of heat this way, she is in danger of developing aplastic anemia with fatal consequences. Another fix is to take her to the vet for a "jill jab" of hormones meant to bring the end of heat, but prolonged use of this method will eventually cause a cancer in a creature already prone to several cancers.

Will a ferret die if it goes into heat and doesn't find a mate?

Well i don't know how to explain it, because i don't know english as well as everybody answer here! but i gonna try!!
In the petstores sell 2 kind of ferrets... the normals with odour glands and the genitals ( they can die if go into heat, but only the girls) and the fixes, those ones don't have the odour glands.... and can live normaly!
i hope you can undestand me :p...
In spanish, and use a tradutor..
Saludos
Liz

It has also been noted that in certain regions of new zealand up until the late 1980's many vetenarians encouraged stimulation of the genetalia to lessen the likelyhood of cancers in the female. Although the only proven methods of this include a jil jab

yes, most likely the female will die if it has no mate when going into heat.
that's why you get ferrets fixed.

yes they do. they need to be bred or spayed so they dont die the get toxic shock syndrome. and that is a killer. please spay or nueter your pets. there are enough ferrets in the world that we really dont need anymore breeders. if you want another ferret after you get yours fixed there are so many ferret org. and shelters that would be happy to adopt a ferret out.
