Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A65 laptop, which has been fairly good to me despite some overheating problems. However, I accidentally pulled too hard on the adaptor and broke off the small piece that holds the adaptor into the computer. I am now unable to recharge it and my battery has less than 20% power left (it was a bad battery to begin with) My question is, what can I do to fix this? I have taken it to a shop and was told that it would be almost impossible to fix. Is there some sort of docking station that I can use with it? Or perhaps an external charger that I can directly plug my battery into? Any help or advice at all would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you very much.

If I am not mistaken, you are talking about the actual adapter connection INSIDE the laptop, correct?

If that is the case, then the tech is only sort of right.

Fixing an AC plug is not almost impossible. He is probably just too lazy to do it.

It does require taking the laptop completely apart, removing the old ac plug, replacing and resoldering a new one. Possibly cutting a small piece out of the plastic case for it to fit properly. This would take a couple of hours to do and should run you upwards of $150. I would call around your area some more and ask people how much they would charge to do it.

One piece of advice. Never move your laptop while anything is plugged into it. Never put any undue strain on external connections, it will only cost you money in the long run.

Sounds like the battery if you have had the laptop over 3 yrs and have always had if plugged in then it may have reached the maximuim cycles of charge it can take IE (10.000hours) Doubt its the charger as thats just passing the power from the plug socket and charging the battery so thats usually a case of it will work or it wont. remove the battery from the laptop and just use A/C power and see if alls well,im pretty sure the laptop will work fine. if so then turn off,put battery in and try again,if problem persists its safe to say the middle man between ure charger and laptop is at fault (IE the battery)

If that is the only thing wrong with your computer it does not sound that hard to fix.
1. Get another charger cord, a universal charger cord may be cheaper, but make sure it will fit your laptop before you buy it.
2. Dig out the broken part from your laptop, say, with a toothpick or other object, being carefull to not damage your computer but still remove the peice broken off inside.

You might try getting in touch with Toshiba and give them your model number and see if they have any kind of spare parts. What you will need is a new chassis but you will need to have a Toshiba tech replace that for you since laptops are usually pretty complicated to get apart.

Or, you could check to see if they make a docking station for that model.

Go to Office Depot, or another place that sells Laptops and get a replacement power cord.
