No, NHL teams do not hold Open Tryouts.
Any NHL Team has farm teams, Junior Leagues, International Leagues and so forth to draw from in a very distinct tiered system, they track players as young as 8 years old in some cases (Sidney Crosby)
Open tryouts in hockey would actually be dangerous, you can't just fill the ice with people and pucks the same way you could for a football field. If you wanted to get a try-out, contact Wilkes-Barre/Scranton their farm team, or Try the ECHL which has a team in Reading, Pennsylvania, the Royals.
From the ECHL website:
"How can I tryout for an ECHL team?
Because the ECHL does not hold a draft like the National Hockey League, individual teams are responsible for recruiting and signing their players. Players should contact the general manager or coach of an individual team to see if there is an opportunity for them to play in the ECHL. Individual team contact information can be found by selecting a team logo on the top of the site."
Of course if you're young enough your best bet is the CHL, but if not, the ECHL is the best entry point.
You can also go on an unconventional route and try and get on Next season's "Making The Cut" a Canadian hockey reality show.
Hope that helps.
PS, in response to someone's answer above, only a small number of NHLers arrive there through a US College team. The Majority are drafted in Junior Hockey, followed by National Development Programs, not very many go from Junior to College as a career path on purpose, Juniors is usually considered a higher level of play.

I'm not really sure about that one. I know the NHL is always looking for new, young talent. Just like every major sport is.
Typically a strong candidate to become an NHL player has playing experience on a solid Division I college hockey team. Some players land in juniors hockey for a couple of years before landing a scholarship with a D-I school; or even a tryout with the pros. Some players do go right on to college.
You would probably have to contact the Penguins organization in Pittsburgh and ask them whether or not they hold open tryouts. Open tryouts are rare.
Players typically have to work their way up the ladder and prove themselves before a pro team will even look at them.
In any event, it takes years and years of hard work to prove to a pro organization that you have what it takes to make it in the NHL. A number of players make their way to the NHL through a pro league like the AHL first. The AHL and NHL have a strong working relationship; and each AHL team is overseen by an NHL team, as far as call-ups of players, etc. goes. Essentially, the AHL is the top developmental league of the NHL.

Many years ago some teams held open tryouts for the mnor league teams. If that went well then you may get a chance to prove yourself at that level before getting called up to the NHL.
Having seen the Penguins this year, I do not think chances are good that an open tryout will be in the plans. They seem pretty solid and open tryouts are rare enough.
If you want to get into playing Pro Hockey you will need to catxh on with a minor league or college team and prove yourself there first. Put up big numbers, show character, skate well and be dedicated. If you do well enough then someone will take a look at you.
If you learn how to take a dive and whine you may even make it to the Pens training camp so you can learn the lost art of acting from the experts.LOL!

I think the last I heard everyteam was required to have a open tryout at least once-that was a couple of years ago though. Teams don't make a big deal out of them though, usually nothing happens from them. I know I heard the Galaxy (soccer) were having open tryouts and everyone would be able to go out and kick the ball around with him-possibly just a stunt. But do to be more specific-the Penguins don't need anyone to tryout anyway.

Toronto (the centre of the Hockey Universe) does it quite regularly both at Lakeshore (practise facility) and the ACC. The team charges a nominal fee usually $5. and the money goes to charity. Often a food bank or a children's charity. These are usually sold out at Lakeshore 2000+ and the lower bowl is full at ACC. Not a bad gesture from a group that is usually only interested in money.

Sure, just bring your gear and show up to any practice, and jump on the ice.
Real answer: no. Some minor league clubs might, but definitely not the NHL.

Most do hold tryouts...but not open ones. Players are invited. Usually these are undrafted free agents.
