My sister in law just had a baby in Las Vegas Nevada 1 month ago. When she was in the hospital she didnt fill out the paper work to obtain the birth certificate or the social security card instead she took it home and by then it was to late to get it through the hospital. Well she just recently moved back to California the other day and still hasnt got those things yet. How can she obtain the birth certificate and social security card in California without having to go back to Vegas. Please any good advice or links Thanks. (AND PLEASE NO SMART *** REMARKS PEOPLE)

She's going to have to find out what the phone number is for the SS dept and the government center that deals with the birth certificates. She may be able to do it via mail, but she also may have to take a trip there to do it.

For the birth certificate all she has to do is get the number for that office (community health probably) to get the address and amount itll cost to get the certificate. usually around $15 and theyll need a copy of her id to prove the parent is recieving the copy. For the social security card theres a paper that she check syes or no to apply for the card and usaully its done right away. She should go down to her local social security office or call the main office `and see if one was applied for and go from there. When she signed that she was the parent(a paper that they dont let you leave the hospital with) they woudl have had her apply for the card then.

She needs to get online and find the address to write to to request the birth certificate. Then, once she gets that, she can apply for a SSN at any social security office. They need two forms of ID for the baby. They will accept the birth certificate and the hosptial bracelet, or shot record.

She needs to contact the county (Vital Records) where she gave birth and they should be able to help her with the birth certificate. Once she has the birth certificate then she can go to her local social security office and apply for a social security card.

I'm sure your midwife can help you with that, she has done it before. YOU are going to use a midwife, aren't you? Please tell me that you are not one of those women who believe in giving birth completely alone without any assistance or even without anybody in the house at the time.
