I saw a lady with her daughter who was a couple of weeks older than my daughter who is 7 months. Her daughter had her fingernails and toenails painted. Cute yes but I'm more worried about the daughter putting her fingers in her mouth and swallowing the paint chips! If shes anything like my daughter, her fingers are always in her mouth. And wouldn't that be harmful to swallow even if it is dried? Most of the polish on the little girl was chipped off and she said it was regular polish, not the cheap play kind for little girls I've seen before.

besides that, how in the world did she get her to sit still long enough to even do it? I'm really confused about this one.

I'm just curious cuz I thought about painting my daughters just haven't yet for fear of the chipping, so don't ridicule me for my concern please.

I don't think you're supposed to paint their fingernails until they're at least a year old if not older. I paint my daughter's toenails and have since she was about 3 or 4 months, but I wouldn't paint her fingernails, because she always puts her hands in her mouth. I'm not sure if it could hurt them because it is dry, but you could ask your daughter's doctor. Just say you're curious. I used to paint them while she was asleep, but now she's old enough that she will just sit there and let me do it.

well my daughter is 3, she loves to get her nails painted. i dont do it often and i use the safest "kid" nail polish that i can find. she likes it, shes old enough now that she doesnt put her fingers in her mouth as much. so that wasnt a problem, besides i would get it off and wash her hands really good after a day (or less) the lady you saw might not know, that the polish could actually be harmful for her daughter. if i saw it again, i would mention to her that she could get some of the kids polish if she insists on painting her daughter's nails

I think it is not good to paint your young girls fingernail. She is very too young. The chemicals in the paint is not good to swallow for the the baby and the nail polish paint easily chips off..Baby still sucking their fingers and toes and it will make them sick probably..I have a 7 months baby and i will never paint her nails like this age.

Little kids are still putting there hands in their mouthes at 3, 4 and even 5 years old. The trick to applying it on a CHILDS hands, is not to do it real thick. Maybe a single layer, and a ayer of acrylic nail glaze, to keep it from chip[ping off. The reason nail polish chips off, is because its on too thick. I also highly reccomend the play stuff for litle girls. On ways to keep the kids still, many little girls like to play "Beauty SHop", where you can't paint nails, style hair (etc.) But when you have a very young child like that, you can really paint them while she's asleep, or you can turn on the TV, and let her relax. You're mommy, you know what your daughter likes. Because you ARE mommy, you can decide whats best for YOUR child. No offense, but maybe the woman you were talking to doesn't care whether her daughter swallows paint chips, as long as her fingers are pretty????

I agree with you and didn't start painting my daughters nail until two factors came about.
1. She didn't suck on her fingers
2. She was excited to have glamorous nails.
I did however, paint her toe nails from time to time as a 18 month and up. I think that for the amount of nail polish that the little girl could possible ingest, it probably wouldn't hurt her, but I still think it's too little and unnecessary.

As tempting as it is to polish fingers and toes, it is best to wait until she doesn't put them in her mouth anymore. Toes may come first in that case (maybe at about 1 year?). Go for cute shoes in the mean time.

Well, she just sounds like a betch... don't judge all of us by how she acts! I'm 18, and I work in an office with older people who do know more than I do, and I'm very respectful of the fact that they might have something to teach me. She probably is just trying to prove that she is mature enough for this job... unfortunately, it sounds like she is failing.

I dont think nailpolish is harmful as a rule. I can see it being harmful is drinking it. But people bite their nails with polish on all the time. I think they have to make it "safe".

So why even ask, don't paint your daughter's fingernails. If someone else wants their child eating fingernail polish, let them. Why ask if you are so worried and it is not a nessecity
