When creating a self-promotional logo, is using your intials vs a unique symbol less creative? can you say it was designed if you're only using your initials?

A symbol is always more mysterious and attention grabbing then just some initials but you could play with the font and tweek the lettering in a way that it could look like both.

I just use my first and last initial, GR in script however they are merged into one symbol. The G starts with the upstroke at bottom far left and finishes when it crosses that again near that point however the line continues up over and around the G to tag half way down the right side of the G then it flows down and up to make the right leg of the R. It is how I do my initials and no one has ever said it did not look cool. I designed that over several days trying to figure out something really great!

A lot of people have used initials to advantage: Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne, Coach, and etc.

It depends on what you are promoting, I think. You want the image to stick in people's minds. If you are just starting out people might not respond to initials only.

The logo should say what you want people to remember.

Sure. You still have to present in a good way and that took some time and effort.
