Seriously, when I was in HighSchool there were so many! Now theres Emo's, Scene's what is this new age fascination.

Evolutionary speaking, the humans/human derivatives learned that travelling in packs protected both them and their offspring. They could also allocate jobs, such as food gathering or protection. This, in turn, led to an increased reproduction of pack mentality "humans" and humans who were less pack related reproduced less, and thus passed on those genes less. Thus, those who travelled in packs, or cliques, passed on their genes. That's the evolutionary perspective.
Common day problems are similar. Emotionally in a vulnerable time like high school, packs "survive."
