EVeryone should be able to make decisions about their own future- they're the ones who have to live it! Is there a specific circumstance that you are asking about- it's quite a strange question.
If you believe that an elderly person is making bad decisions about there future, and that they don't have the capacity for these decisions you can go to court to be allowed to make decisions on their behalf, as well as take over control of their cicumstances- power of attourney- this will only be granted with very good reason though.

Oh, you're trying to get us to do your homework for you!!

Think about your grandparents or other old people you know-
do you think they make good choices?
What do you think they have to make choices about?
What decisions will they need to make about their future- looking after money, making wills, day to day living- what to it, where to go etc.
Why might older people not make good choices- what's happening to their brain as they age- again try to think about older people that you know
Maybe ask your parents what they think about their parent's decisions as they grow older.

That is a difficult question, I don't envy you, I remember always getting wierd essay questions for RE. RE was on a Monday and my mum went out at 6, so I had to get to work quick and discuss it with her before she went out- it always helped.
Good luck- I hope this helps

I think that young people should be discouraged from assuming that they know anything about what is good for older people.

I'm 58 and while I'm not afraid to ask my younger friends for advice. It will be a cold day in hell before I let them make decisions for me!

Elderly people shouldbe treated with respect and compassion.
They should be "allowed" to make their own choices, unless those choices would be hazardous to their health. In that last case, someone (family, friends, medical professionals, etc) should have some input.

I agree totally, and they should carry on until they are a danger to themselves and cannot look after themselves. Oh, and young people are just old people in waiting.

I believe if they have the mental stability and compacity (No offense to them, but it's proven your mind doesn't work as well as you get older). But if they don't have those abilities (Which would be evaluated by their family and doctor) then no, they should be dependent on another.
