Yes, the alternator cannot produce the necessary power, so it is very very hard to turn, causing the belt to slip, making the squeal sound.

You have to decide what piece is doing the screaming here before replacing anything. Try to duplicate the noise with the hood up and then remove the blower motor connector to stop the motor to see if the noise goes away. Does the noise only happen when you are in an AC demand situation, defrost is an AC command? If so the AC clutch or compressor could be at fault here, or even the V-belt that drives this. While the motor is running, inspect this possibility and if unsure disconnect the AC comp. connector and recheck. If it is the alternator you can just touch a long screwdriver to it and put your ear to the handle of the screwdriver and you will be able to listen to the insides of the alternator. This actually will work for any of the above mentioned problems. Just be careful where you touch and hold the screwdriver when the motor is running as moving parts will catch it and fling it or rip your ear off. Careful and good luck.

It could be the alternator, but if it is doing it when the defroster is on it could also be the a/c clutch. Check and make sure all the belts are tight first, then try this. With the car running, disconnect the negative post on the battery keeping a little gas flowing to the engine so it won't stall. If it stalls anyway, it's a bad alternator. If it doesn't it's not the alternator. Then if this doesn't locate the problem, then again with the motor running, turn the heat on full and walk arounf to the motor and look at the a/c coompressor and see if that is where the noise is coming from. I will bet you that it is one of those three things. Loose belt, alternator, a/c compressor. Good luck.

Remove the serpentine belt re-start the motor and see if it screams. If it stops turn the alternator by hand. If the bearings seem "lumpy" or it stops quickly the bearings are bad. When you hear the screaming noise turn your blower motor motor turn it off. If the noise stops you've got a bad blower motor.

when you hear the screaming again, find a large tree and pull up to it so that yourcar is totally against it. pop the hood, leave the car in drive, raise the hood and try to locate where the noise is coming from.
