a: wont happen..
b: when it's announced, Yahoo will go up, MSFT will go down for a while, then MSFT will start ticking back up...
c: once the purchase is completed, there will be some magic formula to determine the value of each, and holders of Yahoo w/ get x or y of MSFT stock as a swap.

but from everything I've heard, Yahoo will not allow themselves to be bought by MSFT, also w/ the big blunder VISTA is, MSFT's market cap has dropped dramatically while Yahoo and their Panama product offering is actually increasing the value of Yahoo.
MSFT does not have the buying power it did as a result of the Vista blunder.

If anything were to happen to yahoo, it'd probably be AT&T since T is out there trying to consolidate things again..It'd also give T a good portal, and also bolster their IPTV product offering etc.

Ways to find out about mergers and acquisitions ahead of time. Get on the Board, OR, get a job on the inside...OR make a friend who has a job on the inside..and then make friends in the PR department

but finance.yahoo.com has message boards trolled constantly by investors who seem to find out this data and post it (I will not verify the validity of the messages they post), plus you can also read up on company news there..
watch CNBC, they seem to be able to sniff out rumors too..

When one large company buys another large company, The purchaser will pay a 'premium' to the seller. The shareholders of the company being purchased will either get cash for their shares or stock of the new company.

News of these types of deals are kept very secret. There is a lot of money to be made if you know about this info before it happens. Over the long term, sometimes these mergers can be very profitable and other times the companies should have stayed apart. Last year when AT&T bought Bell South, both stocks grew over 30%.

I think the next big deal will be XM radio merging with Sirius satellite. The combined company should benefit both companies.

nicely, as you recognize, Yahoo fees dropped 15% based on the Microsoft withdrawal. Had Microsoft performed the deal, Yahoo would have long gone up, yet possibly to no longer $37. purely through fact Microsoft is keen to pay that doesn't advise that the industry will cost the inventory on the comparable cost.

1) Both companies would rise to the stratosphere.
2) Because they would fire at least 10,000 employees from both companies and that would save dozens of billions of dollars over the years.
3) The price just rises.
4) Yes.
