What's up with Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice? Is he a good guy or a selfish not nice guy who just uses people?

He starts off selfish when he asks for money to marry portia but when shylock and antonio he regrets having taken antonio for granted. I've heard people talk of a slightly homosexual element between bassanio and antonio but that depends on how you look at the play.

I think Bassanio borrows money from Antonio so he can impress Portia enough to marry her because of her wealth. Seems fairly shady behaviour to me.
