Your friend is slightly smaller than me and I wear size 6 usually. I would say go with size 4, or size 6. Shirts usually come in XS, S, M, L, etc. Although your friend says she is medium, you have to keep in mind that the average person's size in India is probably different than in the US (I also live abroad and my sizes here are different than in America). She sounds like she is between a medium and a small. Actually, different stores sew their clothes differently, so even in one country you can wear different sizes. In your case, I would ask a salesperson for help and give her your friend's measurements or look a size chart (most stores have those). It's really hard to guess with clothes, make sure you keep the receipt in case the clothes don't fit. Good luck shopping!

38 back. B cup. Usually a girl with a 38 back will have a larger rib cage. She doesn't necessarily have to be overweight. I'm a 34 back and consider myself an average/slim build. The cup size of B is on the smaller scale, and the bigger the back size the smaller that cup is. For example- A girl who is a 34 B will look proportionately bigger than a girl who is a 38 B. To get an even comparison on the cup only: When you go up a back size, you come down a cup size, Example 2) If someone is wearing a 32 DD, the equivalent cup size in a 34 band would be a D. So yes, it's probably a small cup size. But it's hard to tell if the girl is overweight. As i said, she might just have a larger rib cage.

She is about my size, except I'm a few inches taller.

I wear a small to medium shirt size and a 4-6 pant size. How the clothes fit really depends on the designer. I would stick to buying shirts, hats, and sweaters for her. A woman can be really picky about her pants!

Dresses and tops you can usually get in generic medium sizes. Give her measurements to a salesperson in a reputable store and they would probably be able to help you. Clothing wears differently on each women so it will be tricky. You can try and guesstimate on sizes through this website.
