My mailbox is located about 4 feet south of the end of my driveway on a busy 5 lane highway. I am afraid to get my mail!

I would like to move it just inside my driveway, right off the road. The mailcarrier could still just pull alongside to deliver, without getting out of his/her truck, and there is enough room to easily pull back into traffic.

My question is who do I talk to about this? Do I just go to my local post office... Will they be able to help me? Will they say 'no' without considering what I ask?

As long a you box is serviceable from the roadway and is at the appropriate height there should not be a problem. I would call the local post office and talk to the supervisor and the Letter Carrier to check on any concerns about unusual conditions in the area that they may have. Make sure you're not going to be putting the mailbox near your garbage cans or a location people are likely to use for parking.

I myself, am a rural mailcarrier, and I think you are supposed to check with your post office before moving your box, but if it doesn't make the carrier have to alter their route, I doubt that anyone would care. Leave a note in your mailbox and ask...the mailcarrier might be just as glad as you to get it moved away from the traffic!

Yes call your local postmaster/post office. There are regulations as to location and height of your mailbox. Your local postmaster has final say as to where you can put your mailbox.

Page 8 of the following has info about mailbox location.

I have seen mail boxes on busy roads with openings on both ends. That way you can retrive your mail away from traffic. Try the home centers in your area.
