I am looking for a great american who was (obviously) American, but became a _great_ American as a child.... got any ideas ?....... i am doing a presentation at a school function, but it needs to be something that will catch kids attention.... like elementary kids

How about Ryan White? May be a bit on the progressive side for elementary, but you had to admire him.

i would definetly do teddy rooselvelt..especially with the whole teddy bears..you could even pass out miniature teddy bears for all the kids. He was also an environmentalist and a great president
