There are lots of sellers of completely custom systems on eBay. I personally would NOT recommend Dell like a lot of other answerers seem to be doing. You pay an awful lot of extra $$ just to have the Dell name on it, for a product that is the same as everyone elses. I guess they are just recommending what they know, but that doesnt make it the best option out there.

You can go to Dell, Alienware, or a couple other places and they build PC's to your chosen specifications, out of the list of parts they list for you though. If you want a completely custom computer, there are very few online stores that build them in their shop, tiger direct can ship out parts to you though, having used them myself before, it's safe, but shipping isn't exactly fast depending on where you live. Some people report 3 days, it took a week and a half for the bulk of my order, and the CPU went on back order so that took an extra half week.
If you choose to go the parts route, and you dont know how to put it together, ask a good friend that knows what they're doing (make sure they've done it before, dont just take their word for it! computers are very delicate, especially RAM) or you can take it down to any computer store and they can put it together for you.
Then there's the problem of compatibility, if you dont know whats compaitable with what, ask a friend, or again ask for help down at a local computer shop (even best buy or future shop's staff may be of help)

What do you mean by a custom built computer?
If you want a computer that has been specifically built for you, as per your specifications, then you can go to virtually any computer vendor's website and they will build one for you.
If you want to build one for yourself, all you need to do is, make a list of the hardware you need and assemble one for yourself. Assembling is pretty easy.
If you are looking at a custom built computer cabinets, try taking a look at http://www.case-mod.com/. You will find a variety of cases and different configurations.
Hope this helps. If you need anything else, feel free to ask.

Definitely Dell, their whole business is based on custom computers. My mom got one for her needs, she likes to email and work from home. Sister has one to make pictures and videos. You can pick what software, etc and all at the price you want! They also ship and sometimes throw in a free printer! Just ask about the specials.

Either make your own or go with something like HP or Sony laptops. Dell, Alienware, Falcon, and others all are pretty bad. Take that money, order parts from www.newegg.com, put it together yourself in a day and that computer will last you years.
Oh, and Dell is factory built, not custom. As is others.

Best thing to do is find someone who knows how to build them, then order the parts individually, you get alot more bang for the buck that way. I did this and I got the majority of my components from online retailers such as Newegg.com. I saved about $1500 over a comprable system from a retailer such as Dell.

It's really quite easy to build one yourself. Its just plugging cords into the right holes, and since most of them are uniquely shaped, its really hard to get it wrong.
Just buy a book on how to build them, and you should be good to go.
