I am interested in pursuing a teaching career in Italy so I can be closer to my family. Can I major in Italian Studies and then get my ESL certification certificate? Do you have to major in Education to become a teacher? Do you have to get your credentials then get ESL certified? Or is a ESL certificate enough?? I am hoping that someone with personal experience can help. Thanks in advanced.

It really don't sound like a great career move - I would suggest you contact the education department at your college or at your local state college education department (if you aren't enrolled yet) and inform them of your plans. I am sure they can get you the resources to help you out in this area.

Good Luck!!!

not sure about Italy, but to teach in the USA you need a teaching degree and state certificate in ESL. I have a MA in TESOL and a state certificate. I think abroad, they are less strict. I have a friend who taught esl in Guatemala and he was just trained by a company. maybe you can find some answers on www.eslcafe.com

ESL in Italy is not very big plus you would make more money in the USA i tought in spain for several years and knew several ESL teachers, you better off over here for the pay but over there for the family and yes esl certificate is enough
