would you testify against them, even if they had never shown signs of violence or deviant behavior?

When you say "atrocious" I assume you mean something like rape or murder... in which case, yes, it would pain me to do it but my parents raised me to do the right thing, which would be to testify against them.

Not that a lesser crime would be any different...

This would be a depends.

Is the "atrocious crime" the murder of a pedaphile that just raped one of my nieces or nephews, then not in a million years would I testify against them.

Was the crime committed against someone else (other family member / spouse / grandchild / friend?) then more than likely I would testify.

It really depends on my feelings as to what motivated them.

But as my mother is dead and my father doesn't have the motivation to stick up for himself it is really doubtful that I would ever have to contemplate this one.

Well this really comes down to the question of if you will be unbiased towards your parents. Surely, if the people who you saw comitted a crime are random strangers, you will have no problem with testifying against them. But this is your parents. I guess I would have to say that I would not, even though this is not right, but family is family. I can't help it.

Yes. If it was an atrocity then it had to be really bad. We aren't talking a minor incident like a property damage only accident. We are talking about murder or mutilation, sexual abuse or possibly rape.

Depends on what the crime is as the context in which it was committed...

Most likely I would...my conscience is such that I wouldn't be able to live myself if I didn't.
