Be still. Meditate. Practice controlling and or slowing your thinking. Brilliant ideas are not figured out. They come to you when you get out of the way.
Work at reducing your thinking and increasing your awareness.
If you want to relate that on a physicsal basis practice being aware of what sounds you hear that you normally ignore, What the air smells like where you are, What are your senses bringing in right now at this moment?
You may say being still is not much of a physical act, but remember your question and being still is indeed a physical act.You don't have to be still and quiet your mind all the time, only when you want to acquire briliant ideas.

The act of being alive - and being brilliant. Oh, and having an idea.
I've had my "brilliant" ideas at all sorts of times. But more often, I've notice that I'm more likely to put two and two together and get ten, when I'm doing something that doesn't take much concentration on its own. Such as while driving, in the shower, falling asleep, even dreaming (now and then). I believe a person needs a certain mental "flexibility" to have original/brilliant ideas.
I enjoy inventing, and those kind of ideas come just in the process of thinking how something could be done better. You could say that when I'm frustrated by something that doesn't work, my brain begins seeking possible solutions. Necessity is the mother of invention (and brilliant ideas?).

experiencing brilliant, inspiring, uplifting, musefull, thought provoking art, especially music. Art that lifts up the minds train of thought to higher and higher levels of abstraction and complication and doesn't distract or disrupt that train of thought. Art that evokes the emotions that brilliant ideas accompany. Emotions like clarity, awe, joy, wonder, amazement, excitement, profoundness, newness. The art one experiences will work best towards helping massage those brilliant ideas into conscious thought if it is related to the the area those thoughts are in and is ordered and complex and meaningful and clear all at the same time, at least I"m sure I'm missing some details but I'm sure you get my general idea.

I'm going with headstands.
Or being hit by a car and inventing a "jump to conclusions mat".
OK here's a real one-
A blind man invented cruise control after a jerky ride with his lawyer (or friend?).
