Greed, Ego, Ignorance.
Greed because everyone wants money to "better" their lives, and most will go to extreme lengths to get it.
Ego because most people are to proud to admit they are wrong of have failed and will fight to the deaths about things they feel passionate about.
Ignorance because it breads intolerance , hate and fear. Most people fear what they do not understand instead of learning about it.

A Utopian cultures only path is towards stagnation and oblivion. Necessity is the mother of evolution. By being who we are, a virulent, greedy, despicable race interested only in our own individual advancement, we insure the continuation of our species as a whole. We are merely doing what all life is programmed to do, survive. And it is as it has been and will always be. Survival of the fittest. On the bright side, physical strength is on the decline as a predictor of survivability and mental acuity is on the rise as the most desirable trait. If time is remaining on the clock at the end of the race, we as a species may just come out on top.

James 4 1-3
Submit Yourselves to God
1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?
2 You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
It's like what others have said here. If you don't have peace within yourself; you cannot have peace with the world.

A failure to understand ones self, and the resulting aggression one directs towards ones self. This fundamental ignorance and misunderstanding underlies all the aggression that individuals direct towards others, as well as the rationalization of anger and violent behavior of both ones self, and of others. The answer, therefore, is quite simple, though very difficult in practice- Until individuals can discover and ive with peace within themselves, then they will continue to act aggressively towards others...

it is an individualistic question...cometimes a person is in peace when he is meditating fot some people peace is religion and for some peace is the time when they have everything and achieve what they wantd to...so it depends on person to person but peace is like a baby who cannot speak but still fives you a symbol of being always there but its we who drift away from that

Peace supports human life. We do not out the single human (mind) life as our highest value, thus we will always sacrifice them to the alternative values (God, Society, or whim).
War is the tool of selflessness, peace is the tool of selfishness. It opposite what you think.
